Cissampelos pareira is a climbing (2-5m high) with triangular leaves, thick roots, and greenish inflorescence (complete flower head). The stems are normally hairless but can be hairy (short). The flowers produce inedible grape-sized berries. The flower comprises four oblong sepals. Fresh fruits red-colored, transversely ridged, and turn black after ripening. The seeds inside the fruits are in the shape of a horseshoe.
